Choose a corporate event DJ or live band by starting with the purpose of the gathering. A featured live performance, a conversation-focused dinner, and a company dance party ask different things of the entertainment. Compare how each option will support your program before comparing quotes.

There is no automatic winner. The useful choice is the act whose music, production needs, and responsibilities fit the event you are actually planning.

Decide what participation should look like

Tell potential entertainers whether the goal is networking, recognition, celebration, dancing, or a combination. Describe the audience and the moments when attention should move to a speaker or activity.

DJ Kelli’s corporate approach begins with watching how the group responds. A line dance may invite participation, but Kelli does not assume every company gathering should become a dance party. Conversation can be part of a successful event.

That distinction matters when choosing a format. If your main attraction is watching musicians perform, a band may be the strongest fit. If your plan calls for a wide range of recordings and quick changes between event segments, discuss how a DJ would handle those transitions.

Compare the music you will actually hear

Ask a band about its repertoire, arrangements, requests, and how much the set can change during the event. Ask a DJ how music preferences and restrictions are collected, and how the selections can adapt to the room.

Avoid making the decision from a label such as “high energy.” Ask what the act would play during arrival, dinner, and any dancing. A relevant answer should connect the music to your audience and program.

For Puget Sounds, Vibo collects music and event information in advance. That gives DJ Kelli a record of your priorities without requiring your planning team to program every song.

Assign the microphone and program responsibilities

Music performance and MC service are different responsibilities. Confirm who introduces speakers, announces awards, gives guest directions, and coordinates the next cue. Do not assume that a bandleader, DJ, or venue technician will perform every role unless it is part of the agreed plan.

For speeches, distinguish the walk-up or exit cue from the speech itself. DJ Kelli normally turns music down or off for a speaker rather than routinely playing background music underneath the speech.

Your corporate event run of show should identify the person giving the cue, the person speaking, and any music attached to that moment.

Get a production plan from each provider

Ask each act what space, power, setup access, and sound-check time it needs. A full band and a solo DJ may have very different requirements, but the actual proposal matters more than an assumption based on the format.

Include the venue or AV team when reviewing microphones, sound coverage, and any connection to house equipment. If the event uses several rooms or simultaneous activities, describe that before booking.

Also ask what happens during performance breaks. Confirm who supplies music during those periods and whether announcements can still be made. The answer should appear in the plan rather than being improvised at the event.

Compare scope before comparing price

Quotes can include different service hours, musicians or staff, sound equipment, MC work, travel, and production support. Compare those items directly. A lower total may describe a smaller scope rather than a better price for the same service.

If you are considering both a band and a DJ, review the shared schedule and equipment responsibilities together. A combined program may be possible, but it needs an event-specific plan; it is not automatically part of a standard DJ package.

Questions to ask before you decide

  • How would you support our main event goal?

  • What music will work during arrival, dinner, and the final part of the event?

  • Who handles introductions, awards, and speaker cues?

  • What are the space, power, access, and sound-check requirements?

  • What happens during breaks or schedule changes?

  • Which services and hours are included in the quote?

Choose the provider whose answers fit your program and make the responsibilities clear. Our corporate DJ hiring guide goes deeper into that evaluation. For a Puget Sounds event, explore Seattle corporate DJ and MC services.
