For a wedding at MV Skansonia, plan sound for each part of the event and agree on an indoor alternative before relying on outdoor dancing. The ceremony, dinner, and dance floor may use nearby areas, but they still need different coverage and cues.

The official MV Skansonia venue page describes a historic ferry permanently docked on North Lake Union, with indoor and outdoor event spaces. The venue also describes indoor alternatives for rainy weather. Confirm the current layout and decision process with the venue team for your event.

A real change of plan before dancing

At a wedding on September 5, 2026, DJ Kelli had prepared for outdoor dancing at MV Skansonia. Rain arrived just before the planned dances and open dancing were due to begin.

Kelli redirected the main speaker toward the inside of the boat. The planned dances took place indoors while the other speakers were moved into position for the dance floor.

The useful lesson is not that rain is inconsequential. It is that the sound setup had been considered with a possible indoor transition in mind. The DJ could adapt the direction and placement of sound as the plan changed.

Consider dinner and speeches as their own sound zone

In Kelli’s previous Skansonia setups, dinner has required coverage away from the main DJ station. Kelli has used speakers at different points along the dining area so sound can reach the tables without relying on one distant source.

For couples, the planning question is simple: where will guests sit, and where will speeches happen? Give the DJ the current seating plan and identify the intended speaking location. The placement should follow that event’s arrangement rather than repeat an old equipment map.

Plan the transition before choosing the playlist

Discuss where the ceremony, dinner, planned dances, and open dancing will take place. If one part moves inside, which other parts change with it?

Your venue team should guide the weather decision and available layout. The planner, DJ, photographer, and other involved vendors need the same update. Music and announcements then support the new plan rather than drawing guests toward an area that is no longer being used.

The reception timeline guide helps organize the sequence. Our article on handling a delayed wedding timeline gives another example of coordinating a change with the couple and photographer.

Confirm the current technical details

A past event is useful experience, but it is not a current venue specification. Microphone choice, power, equipment placement, and access should be checked for your event.

Kelli’s preparation includes thinking about how to get sound where it needs to be while limiting unnecessary moves later. The exact method depends on the room, the program, and the requirements agreed with the venue.

Questions for your venue and DJ

  • What is the planned location for each part of the wedding?

  • Where will those moments happen if the outdoor plan changes?

  • Who makes the weather decision, and how is it shared?

  • Where will guests hear speeches during dinner?

  • Which sound adjustments are needed before dancing starts?
